Wind or Hills ...
Sunny, warm, dry - perfect weather to get out for a ride. Unbelievable considering it was still January. I headed out in high spirits for a rare winter outdoor ride. In a matter of minutes I hooked up with a small group of cyclists also taking advantage of the sunshine. It doesn’t get any better than this…
And then we turned - directly into a headwind. A ride which was thoroughly enjoyable suddenly turned into miserable suffering. This wasn’t a mid-summer hammer fest where you expect to struggle. This was a take it slow, winter pace ride. I desperately followed the wheel in front of me dreading my turn at that front. I hate wind.
It got me thinking, what do cyclists hate more: wind or hills? The common perception is that hills are the bane of cyclists. With hills there is always a summit, a peak in which there is a sense of accomplishment. With wind there is no peak, no triumph, just suffering.
So what's worse? Hills or Wind?
